First thing in the morning just after I’ve prayed I want to consume something fortifying as oppose to objectifying. What I reach for sets the tone for my entire day. So my go to place for positivity is my night stand. I might add or rotate one of these books if I find myself in a tough season but for the most part these three books stay on my night stand.
1. The Book of Proverbs by God
Most people have a bible near their bed however most people don’t know how to use the Bible for their benefit. I keep my bible bookmarked to The Book of Proverbs.
About three years ago an amazing Pastor and his wife suggested that if ever I wanted less drama and more wisdom in my life I should read one proverb a day for a month. So I that’s exactly what I did and that practice improved my life dramatically.
Before the end of the month I built up enough confidence to end a romantic relationship. I also gained more insight and strategy for my next business move.
My deepest desire is to live life with wisdom. I loath knowing something but not acting on the information. The book of Proverbs keeps me grounded in practices of acting on what I know. Living wisely every day expands my happy place.
I found this book when I was 23 years old and looking for a natural way to heal balding, skin rashes and fatigue. At the time I had lost over 30% of my hair, couldn’t sleep, and broke out in a body rashes. After months of pain, I went to a doctor to figure out what was going on. My doctor referred me to a dermatologist.
The dermatologist looked at head and within seconds recommended that I quit my life and move to Bora Bora. He said and I quote “based on the damage to your scalp I know a few things about you…
- You are in an incredible amount of physical pain
- You don’t take care of yourself at all
- The steroid, scalp treatments and pain killers I’m going to prescribe won’t do much to treat the cause of your condition. The medicine is only going to stop your symptoms.
- If you don’t listen to what your life is trying to tell you, you’ll go bald and live in severe pain for the rest of your life.
This was the first time a doctor had ever explained the difference between causes of illness and symptoms of illness. He said my real prescription is that I quit my life and move to Bora Bora. He said legally I can only give you medicine to remove your symptoms. I left his office in less pain but consumed by his words: “your life is telling you something, you need to listen”.
Well I didn’t have the money to go to Bora Bora so I did the next best thing I went to my grad school library and searched alternative ways to heal sickness. Louise’s book You Can Heal Your Life came up in the search. I checked it out and read it in one day. The next day I changed my entire life. When I follow the teaching from Louise’s book I stay in great health. I always know when something is off in my life because my body tells me first! Do yourself a favor and get this book.
We do everything on our phones. While I’ve enjoyed many devotional from my iPhone bible app, looking at my phone first thing in the morning didn’t feel right for me.
I found Until Today: Daily Devotionals For Spiritual Growth and Peace of Mind in a thrift store for 25 cents!! It was around the holiday season. A time when many of us stress out about where our lives are going. Ms. Iyanla’s book helped me to calm down and clear my mind of all the anxious thoughts.
My favorite thing about this devotional is that it divides the year into themed months. Every month I focus on a significant self-development theme, such as: forgiveness, self-worth, or peace. With each devotional I get a deeper and deeper understanding of the themes and how I can use them to improve my life. I just love this book so much
