Fear Of Success: Cognitive Dissonance
In this episode sponsored by Better Help, I’m facing my fear of success through managing cognitive dissonance.
The google definition of cognitive dissonance is the state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes, especially as relating to behavioral decisions and attitude change.
I know, I know sounds complicated but stick with me because managing cognitive dissonance has a massive impact on our ability to overcome fear of success.
My definition of cognitive dissonance is the mental, emotional, and psychological distance between where you are right now and where you want to be. Cognitive dissonance turns your brain into mush and prevents you from thinking through basic or complex problems. Our mental and emotional capacity is reduced to that of a four-year-old. In short cognitive dissonance sucks.
Cognitive dissonance happens because our brains can not hold competing images, beliefs, thoughts or attitudes. The brain turns to mush under the pressure to make one image a reality. The trouble is our brain rarely chooses the image of our greater, healthier, and best self.
Cognitive dissonance shows up anytime we reach for more. More wealth, health, vitality, love, relationships or anything we desire but don’t currently have. The challenge becomes strengthening our brain enough to stay engaged until we reach our desired outcome.
In this episode, I talk about the three areas of my life where cognitive dissonance shows up the most to feed my fear of success and how I’m going to manage it to move forward and achieve the success I deserve and desire.
