My Postpartum Must-Haves

As a second-time mom with a 22-year age gap between my children, navigating postpartum feels like an entirely new experience. While I was pregnant, I found myself caught up in all the advice from first-time moms sharing their extensive postpartum must-haves. At one point, I genuinely believed I’d need to spend over $500 on postpartum care products!

Thankfully, my budget-savvy and intentional brain stepped in, reminding me that I thrive best when things around me are simple. Once I applied this mindset to postpartum care, I realized there were only a handful of essentials I truly needed—provided my birth went as planned. If it didn’t, I’d add a few items as necessary.

Now, a week into my postpartum journey, I’ve found a simple and supportive rhythm. Here are postpartum care essentials that have been absolute lifesavers during this time:

Top Postpartum Essentials for Moms in 2024

1. Frida Mom Postpartum Panties

While the panties provided by the hospital were good, the Frida Mom panties were absolutely marvelous. These snug, boy-short-style, dark gray disposable panties are perfect for those early postpartum weeks. They offer just the right amount of comfort and support when you need it most.

2. Panty Liners

Bleeding is inevitable during postpartum, but it’s often irregular. A full pad isn’t always necessary, especially after a vaginal birth. Having panty liners on hand gives you just the right amount of coverage without feeling over-prepared or uncomfortable.

3. Vaseline

This multi-purpose gem has been a go-to for me during postpartum. It’s unscented and can be used for stretch marks, dry nipples, lips, hands, the perineal area, and even around the baby. It’s simple, effective, and versatile—exactly what you need during this period.

4. Breast Ice Packs

Whether you’re nursing or not, having a couple of breast ice packs on hand is essential. They’re a lifesaver for soothing sore, engorged breasts or even for relieving small aches and pains.

5. Pajama Sets

In those first few weeks, you may not want to get fully dressed, but you’ll still want to feel presentable and comfortable. Pajama sets are one of best postpartum products for second-time moms! They serve as a gentle reminder to take it easy, while also providing nursing-friendly access and being easy to clean.

6. Slides

Convenient and comfy, slides are your best friend during postpartum. They’re perfect for quick trips around the house or to the doctor’s office. Plus, they’re super easy to slip on when your hands are full with your new bundle of joy.

7. Dial Bar Soap

Postpartum hormones can make your body smell different than usual, which might take you by surprise. A great antibacterial soap, like Dial bar soap, is essential for keeping you feeling fresh and healthy. It’s gentle yet effective, ensuring you’re taking care of yourself while also caring for your little one.

8. Palmer’s Body Oil

Whether it’s due to hormones, cold weather, or just the natural dryness that can accompany postpartum, body oil is a must-have. I swear by Palmer’s Body Oil—it’s nostalgic, smells amazing, and doesn’t leave a greasy residue. I used it throughout my pregnancy and continue to use it postpartum to keep my skin moisturized and healthy. Bonus: No stretch marks so far!

9. Prenatal Vitamins

Your prenatal vitamins aren’t just for pregnancy—they’re for postpartum too. Since I’m breastfeeding, it’s especially important for me to maintain my health and energy. Prenatals help me do just that, ensuring I’m replenishing the nutrients my body needs while nourishing my baby.

10. Breastfeeding Snacks

I’m not talking about fancy lactation cookies or specialty snacks. I mean your favorite snacks—whatever brings you joy. One of the easiest ways to maintain your milk supply is to stay relaxed, and what better way to relax than indulging in a simple pleasure like your go-to treat? And no, it doesn’t have to be healthy!

Budget-Friendly Postpartum Recovery Items.

This list is simple, but it has made all the difference for me during this postpartum journey. My approach to postpartum care is about keeping it intentional, manageable, and centered on what truly supports me.

What about you? Do you have any postpartum must-haves that have made your journey easier?
