Why I’m Stepping Away From Speaking and Building a Blog

The dream has always (yes, always) been to be a housewife and stay-at-home mom. My man, my man, my man came along and made me both a wife and a mom—and I can’t get enough of these two roles.

All jokes aside, from the time I became a first-time mom at seventeen, all I wanted was to focus on my child. However, being a teenage mom didn’t give me the opportunity to fully embrace that dream. I did my best by dedicating the first two years to college, but I never got to lean fully into my housewife and stay-at-home-mom vibes.

Rediscovering My Dream to Be a Stay-at-Home Mom

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that for the last three years, I’ve consistently answered this question from my 21 Questions Journal: What skills do you want to learn in the coming year? My answer has always been the same: I want to learn the skill of homemaking.

Now, I didn’t know I’d become both a wife and a new mom within two years of meeting my husband, but I wanted to be the best homemaker in all the land—whether I had more children or ever got married.

Why Homemaking Skills Matter to Me

During my journey to becoming debt-free, I realized how important home is to my overall health and wellness. I also recognized that I had unresolved trauma surrounding the concept of home due to my early childhood in foster care.

When I connected the dots, I knew I had to give myself permission to learn homemaking skills. I hadn’t hit the developmental milestones that naturally teach you how to create a home for yourself.

Here’s how I’ve been learning homemaking skills:

  1. Year One: I focused heavily on cooking.

  2. Year Two: I explored decorating and design.

  3. Year Three: I honed my cleaning and organizing skills.

Now, I’m ready to apply everything I’ve learned to create a happy and nurturing home for my family.

Why I’m Stepping Away from Speaking

To fully embrace my homemaking dream, I had to make some tough decisions. The biggest one was asking myself:

How well could I focus on home if I traveled three to four times a month for speaking engagements?

The honest answer? I couldn’t.

Initially, I thought I’d reduce my speaking schedule to part-time. But when I got serious with myself, I knew even part-time speaking would mean being away from my daughter. I didn’t work so hard to build multiple six-figure businesses just to spend her first year of life apart from her.

With that, my decision became clear: I needed to step away from speaking to be the kind of mom I’ve always dreamed of being.

Why I Started Blogging

Stepping away from speaking didn’t mean I could stop working altogether. I know myself—I have entrepreneurship running through my veins. I see strategies and business opportunities in nearly everything, all the time.

Blogging became the perfect outlet. Here’s why:

  • Blogging allows me to stay connected with the people I’ve inspired during my decade of speaking.

  • It helps me continue building my personal brand in case I decide to return to speaking.

  • I can grow a supportive community where I can both give and receive inspiration.

  • Blogging fulfills a lifelong dream of being a writer and letting my inner Carrie Bradshaw shine.

Aligning with My Rest Practice

Seven years ago, after a nervous breakdown, I changed my life by implementing habits that supported my mental, physical, and spiritual health. One of the most important habits I developed was my rest practice:

  • Every seven days, I take a day off.

  • Every seven weeks, I take a week off.

  • Every seven months, I take a month off.

  • Every seven years, I take a year off.

While blogging may not seem like rest, for me, it is. Blogging offers flexibility—I can write from my bed (like I’m doing right now), at the park, on the train, or anywhere in the world. This ease allows me to work without the pressure of perfectionism, which often crept into my speaking and coaching businesses.

A New Chapter: From Speaking to Blogging

I’m thrilled about what this year will bring as I step away from a lucrative speaking career to pursue my lifelong dream of being a stay-at-home mom and homemaker. Blogging allows me to combine my passion for entrepreneurship with my dream of creating a happy home.
